Project Tiger, launched in 1973-74, is one of our most successful conservation projects in recent times. The project aims at tiger conservation in specially constituted 'tiger reserves, which are representative of various bio-geographical regions within the country. Is committed to maintaining a viable population of tigers in the wild.

An estimate of the population of tigers in India at the turn of the century, placed the figure of 40,000. Subsequently, the first tiger census in India was conducted in 1972 revealed the existence of only 1827 tigers. various pressures in the second half of last century led to the gradual decrease in the desert, destroying vital habitat of the tiger. At the meeting of the IUCN General Assembly in New Delhi in 1969, serious concerns have been expressed about the threat to many species of wildlife and the shrinkage of natural areas of the country. In 1970 a national ban on tiger hunting was imposed in 1972 and the Wildlife Protection Act came into force. A task force was then established to formulate a plan for tiger conservation with an ecological approach.

The project was launched in 1973, and the tiger reserves were created in the country on a strategy of "core-buffer". The main sectors were exempted from any kind of human activity and buffer zones have been subjected to "land use to conserve." Management plans were developed for each tiger reserve, based on the principles set out below:

1. Elimination of all forms of human exploitation and biotic disturbance from the central and rationalization of activities in the buffer zone.
2. Restricting the habitat management only to repair the damage caused to the eco-system by human interference and the other in order to facilitate the recovery of the ecosystem to its natural state.
3. Monitor changes in flora and fauna over time and conduct research on wildlife.

Initially, 9 tiger reserves were established in different States during the period 1973-74, by pooling resources with the central government and the state. These nine reserves covered an area of about 13,017 sq.km-viz Manas (Assam), Palamau (Bihar), Similipal (Orissa), Corbett (UP), Kanha (MP), Melghat (Maharashtra), Bandipur (Karnataka) Ranthambhore (Rajasthan) and Sunderbans (West Bengal).

The project started as a 'Central Sector Scheme "with the full support of the central government until 1979-1980: later to become a" center-sponsored Scheme of 1980 to 81, with a fair division of costs between the center and states.

The W.W.F. gave an aid of 1 million dollars in the form of equipment, the expertise and literature. The various states are also responsible for losses due to forgo registration in the reserves.

The main results of this project are excellent recovery of habitats and consequently an increase in population of tigers in the reserve areas, a simple 9268 reserves from 1972 to 1576 in 27 reserves in 2003. Tiger, being at the top of the food chain, can be considered as an indicator of the eco-system. For a viable tiger population, a habitat should possess a good prey base, which in turn depends on an undisturbed forest vegetation. Thus, 'Project Tiger', is essentially the conservation of eco-system as a whole, and apart from tigers, all other wild animals also increased in number in the project areas. In the following five-year plans, the main objective was to expand the buffer and core zones in certain reserves, intensification of protection and economic development in buffer zones of existing tiger reserves, creation of tiger reserves and strengthening further the activities research tiger tours in India.

Management strategy has been to identify limiting factors and to mitigate the appropriate direction. The damage to the habitat needed to be corrected in order to facilitate the recovery of eco-system as much as possible. management practices that tend to push the wildlife populations beyond the carrying capacity of the habitat have been carefully avoided. A core minimum of 300 sq. km. with a buffer size has been recommended for each project area. The general administration of the project is monitored by a steering committee. The project comprises the governments of respective states. A "camp director is appointed for each reserve, which is assisted from the field and technical staff. The chief director of wildlife in the various states are responsible for the implementation on the ground. In the center, a true" director "of the project, coordinating work for the country.

03 November 2010 @ 12:37 pm

I haven’t always hated the Holidays. when I was a kid, I couldn’t wait for Thanksgiving and Christmas…..any excuse to have a few days off from school…the anticipation of new toys…..snow!!! It was all great fun, as it should be for any kid.

No. It wasn’t until I got older that I grew to dread the entire last 2 months of the year. I can’t pinpoint exactly when the change occurred, and it wasn’t just ONE event that changed my outlook on what should be a joyous occasion. It happened gradually, over many, many years. But-if I had to pick 10 reasons why I hate theholidays-they would be as follows:

1.Too Much Food:
Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, Stuffing, Green Bean Casserole, Yams, Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie, Bread Pudding, Homemade Noodles, Giblet Gravy— A heart attack begging to happen. We don’t need all that food-but we eat it!!! Every last bite. And don’t forget the cranberry sauce, and eggnog!! It doesn’t matter where you go…..it’s always the same……too much food.

2. Christmas: Have Your Gifts Become a Measure of Your Love & a Tool to Manipulate Your Perceived Status and Worth?
Don’t get me wrong. I love my family. Each and every dysfunctional one of them. I love seeing them and spending time with them. But….my family is huge!!! There are over 50 of us when we all get together….and, who has a place big enough to sit 50 people down to eat a meal??? Nobody in MY family, that’s for sure. We rented out the Lion’s Den one year….but it was cold and uncomfortable. So now we all crowd into my sister’s house…..because she’s the only one of us with a big enough open space for all of us…..though most of us are left standing all night or sitting on the floor. But hey….it’s all about family…right??? Yeah, well…..all I can say is….Thank God it only comes once a year!!!

3. Too Commercial
What the hell is the deal with Walmart putting out Christmas decorations before we’ve even dealt with Halloween!!! I’ve heard so many Christmas Carols before November 1st, that by Christmas, they make me want to puke!!! And ….I love Christmas Carols!!! Well, used to, anyway.

4. Something Always Happens to Ruin It
The turkey gets burnt… someone doesn’t show… somebody gets hurt…someone says something to piss off somebody else Never fails. You just know… even if you do muster up some vacation spirit… it’s not going to last… because Something always happens.

5. Someone Always Ruins It
Yep, if not something, then someonecan always be counted on to screw things up for everyone else. The kids getting yelled at by Dad for being too noisy…..it’s Christmas for Pete’s sake-kids are supposed to be loud….they’re excited!!! Shut the hell up and let them have some fun! Or else, they’ll end up like me…..hating the luxury vacations !!!

6. Lonely
This is a new one. How can you feel lonely surrounded by all that family? Well…..get a divorce. You don’t know lonely until you wake up on Christmas morning, alone, with nothing under the tree for you….except the gifts you bought for yourself, from Santa…..so the kids don’t ask why Santa didn’t bring Mommy anything? Yeah…..it sucks!

7. Nephew died
On New Year’s Day, 1988. We were all gathered at Mom’s for Spare Ribs and Black Eyed Peas… a family tradition….when my brother showed up and gave us the news. My nephew was dead. We don’t get together at Mom’s on New Year’s anymore.

8. Brother Died
1:45 am New Year’s Day, 2006. Same brother… he’d been in failing health for years….really, since his son died….and it’s like he picked that day to give up. We were all called to the hospital… I was the only one who didn’t get the call that he had died before anyone got there…so I was the only one who saw him after he died. And I’m the only one who has to remember him the way he looked then… SO not fair. Try getting that image out of your head!!

9. Another Birthday is Coming Up
My birthday is in February….and I’m not getting any younger… so the holidays are just a reminder that I’ll be OLDER soon. I keep thinking I’ll quit having birthdays….but then, I guess they ARE better than the alternative!! But it really sucks being 40 something and single. Never thought I’d be in this situation. I thought I’d be married for 50 years…at least. Well… fat chance of that now. I don’t think I’ll live to be 90 something. That is, if I were to get married again….and even fatter chance of that! Been there, done that, bought the T-Shirt. No thanks!

10. People Have Forgotten Why We Celebrate
Schools don’t call it Christmas break anymore… it’s winter break. They shortened Christmas to “Xmas”. The most important thing to just about everyone is getting to the stores the day after early enough so you don’t have to wait in line forever to exchange that ugly sweater Aunt Norma gave you. Might as well erase John 3:16 from the Bible….”For God so loved the world that He gave his only Begotten Son…..” Come ON people…..Christ was born……the savior of the world….the messiah… The reason we have Christmas!!! The tradition of gift giving dates from the time of Christ’s birth and the Wise Men giving him gifts of gold, frankincense and mir… duh!!! Whatever happened to “It’s better to give than to receive”? That is the number one reason why I hate the holidays!!! You spend half the year trying to find that perfect gift…just to find out it’s not what he wanted….or it doesn’t fit….or it doesn’t work….or it’s the wrong color… Argh! I want so badly to go back to the times when gifts were homemade…and you only got a few… if that many….and they were made with love….and you knew you were going to love it….whatever it was….because it was made just for you. Maybe we should pass a law……no gift shall be bought….or bigger than a bread box.

I don’t know……maybe when I have grandkids, the joy will come back into the holidays for me……but I doubt it. I think I’m doomed to be a Scrooge forever. Makes me want to just crawl under the covers and not wake up until Spring!

Countless great beaches, stunning nature and fascinating culture, visitors welcome. Costa Rica is now the most visited country in Central America, where tourists can escape in many national parks and wide beaches from the European winter. But who wants to go with more time or less-trodden paths should one deal with Costa Rica's northern neighbor, Nicaragua. Although Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in the region, it is regarded as the first country Central America. The horrors of the Contra revolution in the 80s will make for a long time to create man, but the Nicas, as they call themselves, a proud and friendly people. Of natural beauty is its neighbor, Nicaragua Costa Rica in every way. Vast rain forests, volcanoes, perfect, endless beaches and enchanting lakes dominate the landscape. Particularly impressive goals are the beaches of the Pacific side, the paradise Islas del Maiz in the Caribbean and the Isla de Ometepe in Lake Nicaragua, Central America's largest lake.

On New Year to VietnamVietnam has not developed very strong tourism. Although the months of November to February are considered as a cool season in the north, the temperatures for Europeans are still more than pleasant. The south is tropical, always hot. During vacation packages the European winter where the dry season.

Travelers meet in Vietnam incredibly friendly people and breathtaking scenery, to a completely different culture, one should be treated with respect and openness. The capital of Saigon newcomers bombarded with impressions of chaotic traffic and total confusion. Very famous is the Vietnamese cuisine, which is also very palatable to Europeans.should plan thoroughly, but who intends to travel to New Year period after Vietnam. For the New Year is all about Vietnam Tet head, flights are fully booked and closed attractions. Those who are present at this time in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, the country experienced before in a different way.

Lonely Scotland in Winter

Scotland in Winter? So some of the British North in the summer to cool. But who have a thick jacket in the closet and found somewhere in the deep subconscious also allows the possibility that there could be even icy rain instead of snow romantic, in the Scottish winter can detect a special magic. The temperatures in the ancient Caledonian lowlands in winter usually move between zero and ten degrees. Depending on wind and rain development but it can feel quite even colder. The Highlands are seen in the cold months, white with snow, dense and heavy snowfalls are possible until well into March. On clear days, the landscape revealed in breathtaking beauty and the strange calm that leaves the everyday life very much. The landscape is covered in snow, is like being transported into a unique silence. Huge herds of deer are the only dark spots in a white mountains.

Scotland in the winter and Christmas is for individuals. The offer for tours is often limited to the summer months. A major advantage of the unusual journey time but the prices are for accommodation, the fall in winter in the basement. Lufthansa flies over the year to cheap Edinburgh. But one should consider that many of the famous sights such as castles and other historic sites are closed during the winter months.

It’s a well known dilemma: do you go for the exciting buzz of a city break or the more relaxing option of topping up the tan on the beach? Well, why not do both?

Maximise your holiday time by combining city break with sandy break and visiting an urban beach this summer. The following are 10 cities where beaches, deckchairs and cocktails can be found well within city limits.

Sydney (Australia)
Surely one of the most famous city beaches, Sydney’s Bondi is a well known surf spot and modern coastal resort. Dozens of cafes, bars and restaurants look out over the beach, which is backed by attractive parkland and is popular with rollerbladers, skaters and cyclists. Quickly reached from downtown Sydney using local buses, Bondi is Australia’s most iconic beach.  And with the city’s ever increasing popularity cheap flights to Sydney from all over the world are more popular than ever, making this an ideal urban beach destination.

Barcelona (Spain)
This Spanish city is a great place to blend a beach break with city slicking. One of the biggest beaches around is Barceloneta which is 1,100m long and attracts hundreds of Barcelonans when the sun comes out – which is fairly often of course! If you prefer something more chilled, try Nova Icària, one of the quietest beaches in the city so ideal for families and well equipped with games areas and volleyball courts.

New York (USA)
Despite being one of the biggest most densely populated cities on earth, New York has several beaches where New Yorkers can escape from city life and get their sand fix. With flights to New York being highly popular the route is well served all year round but especially during the summer months when the beaches are at their best. Coney Island in Brooklyn is a favourite getaway, with Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach popular places to soak up some rays.

Copenhagen (Denmark)
The Danish capital may not strike you as a sand hot spot, but Copenhagen has two beaches close to the city centre, easily accessible by the local S-train. Here you’ll find clean water, white sand and water temperatures around 20 C during summer best for vacation. Amager Beach Park is the closest to the centre and offers 5km of bathing and a shallow lagoon – a perfect swimming zone. If you just want to swim but are not fussed about sand, dive into Havnebad, Copenhagen’s harbour. The water is clean and clear and it’s a popular spot for cooling off with the local city dwellers, and it’s just a few minutes walk from the centre.

Berlin (Germany)
Despite being a landlocked city miles from the coast, Berlin boasts several urban beaches, easily accessible to folks from all over the world with the abundance of flights to Berlin on offer.
